Biology 106: Pathophysiology

Watch engaging and brief video lessons to learn how diseases impact the human body. Lessons utilize dynamic animations and fun graphics to bring pathophysiology concepts to life.

About the Course

In this course, you'll learn about cell injury, the cardiovascular system, clinical applications and more. The pathophysiology instructors are experienced and knowledgeable educators, who have put together comprehensive video lessons in categories ranging from issues with the immune system to nervous system disorders and from skin pathologies to reproductive system disorders. Each category is broken down into smaller chapters that cover topics more in-depth. These video lessons make learning fun and interesting. You get to utilize self-graded quizzes and practice tests that allow you to gauge how much you have learned.

Course Topics

The Basic Components of Pathophysiology Learn about the fluid mosaic model of the cell membrane, multicellular organisms, cellular adaptation and decreases in number and size of cells. Find out the various causes of cellular injury and how a cell recognizes that it is injured. Also study cell and tissue swelling, irreversible injuries, storage diseases, immunization and vaccination.
The Consequences of an Aberrant Immune System Learn about the definition and causes of inflammation, acute and chronic inflammation, inflammation's impact on the entire body and anaphylactic shock. Find out about head injuries, epidural hematoma, spinal cord trauma, epilepsy and vascular abnormalities. Study disorders like polio, Reye's syndrome, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig's disease. Examine tumors, sudden paralysis, autism and Down syndrome.
Cardiovascular Abnormalities Study the blood flow and parts of the heart, the cardiac cycle and electrocardiograms. Examine heart conditions and diseases and various disorders, including genetic, valvular and inflammatory. Learn about heart failure causes, types of shock, primary and secondary causes of blood pressure and pericardial effusion. Also study peripheral arterial and venous disease symptoms.
Pathologies of the Respiratory System Study the airway and lungs, pleural cavities and how carbon dioxide is transported in the blood. Find out about respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, COPD, how the lungs affect the heart and respiratory failure conditions. Examine tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, bacterial pneumonia, lung cancer and pulmonary embolisms.
Diseases of the Urinary System Study the structure of the kidney and the nephron, the function of the renal tubule and the roles that sodium, chloride and potassium play in human bodies. Learn about alkalosis, acidosis, acute and chronic renal failure, kidney disease and Nephrotic syndrome. Also find out about kidney stones, renal cancer, bladder cancer and polycystic kidney disease.
Conditions Affecting the Gastrointestinal System Examine the functions of the stomach, small intestine, gall bladder and pancreas. Study motility disorders, malabsorption, peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowels and jaundice. Find out what causes liver disease, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and colorectal cancer.

Examine insulin production and insulin's role in diabetes. Study the signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism, pituitary adenoma, Grave's disease and hypoparathyroidism.
Hematological Maladies Learn about red and white blood cell functions, platelets, Rh factor and the various types and causes of anemia. Learn about bleeding disorders, blood coagulation and how wounds heal. Find out what happens when the body has too many white or red blood cells and examine diseases like leukemia and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Also study transfusion reactions, causes of immune deficiencies and blood types.
