Adult students in the San Francisco Bay Area have a wide variety of education options. Community colleges, universities and adult education centers provide a number of programs. Read on to learn more.

Schools and Programs

Community colleges and universities in the San Francisco Bay Area offer continuing education programs and courses aimed at adult students. A number of adult education centers, including adult schools run by local school districts, provide opportunities for career training, basic education and personal development. Schools may have multiple campuses available. Some programs may provide students with a certificate or prepare students for certification exams. Two schools and some of their programs are provided below.


San Francisco State University (SFSU) College of Extended Learning

The purpose of the College of Extended Learning at SFSU is to provide adult continuing education opportunities aimed at career advancement, career change or personal growth. A number of career certificate programs are offered in addition to individual classes, seminars, workshops or course series. Courses are held at two locations in the Bay Area.

Project Management Certificate Program

SFSU is a Registered Education Provider with the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students who complete this program are eligible to take the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam. Coursework covers project planning, quality management, project estimating and human resources.

Multimedia Studies Certificate Program

Students can choose from certificate programs in web and print design, digital video, digital audio and Maya 3D design. Courses can be selected based on individual areas of interest. Many courses are offered online. Topics of interest include typography, graphic design, storyboarding and Adobe Photoshop operation.

Mandarin Chinese Program

Offered in conjunction with the Confucius Institute at SFSU, this program provides an introduction and basic foundation in Mandarin Chinese. Students develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Medical Billing and Coding Programs

Students learn to troubleshoot billing issues, file claims, complete insurance forms, appeal denied claims and streamline billing procedures. Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coder exam and the American Health Information Association Certified Coding Associate exam.

Pharmacy Technician Program

This 50-hour course covers medical terminology, drug generic and brand names, dosage calculations, IV flow rates, dose conversion, prescription dispensing and inventory control. Graduates are eligible to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam.

Hayward Adult School

Located just east of the San Francisco Bay, the Hayward Adult School provides adult basic education, English as a second language (ESL) programs, parent education, apprenticeship programs and workforce development opportunities. The school is operated by the Hayward Unified School District.

Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Program

This state-approved program trains individuals for careers as CNAs through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience at a long-term care facility. The total length of the program is 171 course hours.

Bricklaying Apprenticeship Program

Students may apply for this apprenticeship program which is operated by a joint committee of union representatives, local contractors and consultants from the Division of Apprenticeship Standards. Apprentices receive pay at 40% of the current journeyman rate during the program.

Medical Clerk Program

This program focuses on front office administrative tasks including receptionist duties and processing insurance claims. Required courses include medical billing and coding, keyboarding and medical terminology.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

ESL classes are designed for non-English speaking adults. Students improve public communication skills. A citizenship class is also offered. ESL students can take morning or evening courses.

General Educational Development (GED) and Adult Basic Education Classes

Classes are offered in adult basic education and in preparation for the GED exam. Students work on reading, writing or math skills. Adult students can also complete requirements for a high school diploma.
