Michigan Colleges Offering Adult Education Classes and Courses

Adult education courses can be found throughout Michigan at adult schools run by local school districts or through the continuing education departments at Michigan colleges and universities. College programs usually focus on professional development skills. Many colleges also offer opportunities for leisure or recreational study. Northwestern Michigan College

Northwestern Michigan College's (NMC) Extended Education Service offers lifelong learning opportunities to residents of nearby communities. Programs and classes for personal enrichment and professional development are offered both online and on campus.

Small Business Entrepreneur Certificate

Students learn to start or expand their own businesses through a series of seven courses. Courses cover start-up issues, financial management, customer service and marketing practices.

Refrigerant Certification Program

Laws, regulations, refrigerant systems, materials and procedures are covered in this 1-day course. Students are tested and receive the certification required by the EPA.

Computer Classes

NMC offers computer classes for beginners or more advanced adult students. Courses are held in computer labs where students have the opportunity to practice what they are learning. Courses include Microsoft Office products, selling on eBay, website design and the Internet.

Culinary Classes

Students attend class in the college's teaching kitchen. Offerings include basics of meat, sauces, cake decorating, Polish cooking, preserving and candy making.

Creative Arts Classes

Adult students have the opportunity to explore their creative sides though several artistic media. Course offerings include watercolors, oil painting, beading, pottery and jewelry making.

Washtenaw Community College

The Lifelong Learning Center at Washtenaw Community College provides adult education classes to Michigan residents in 19 categories, including history, law, computers and personal finance. Additionally, classes especially for seniors are offered at senior centers throughout Washtenaw County.

Business Classes

These classes are aimed at professional individuals who need to boost skills in specific areas. Courses cover topics such as human resources, leadership development, business ethics and finance.

Social Work Classes

Specifically for those employed in social work, these classes enhance practical knowledge and provide required contact hours toward license renewal. Topics include Asperger's Syndrome, aging, dialectical behavior and group psychotherapy.

Construction Classes

Classes designed for professionals within the construction industry include MIOSHA General Industry and Construction standards, lathe work, electrical code and contracting. Several do-it-yourself classes are also offered for non-professionals.

Phlebotomy Skills Class
