Adult Education in Connecticut with Course and School Overviews
There is a number of adult education centers located throughout Connecticut, many operated by school districts. Adult students can find additional opportunities through community colleges and the continuing education divisions of Connecticut universities. These schools provide opportunities for adult basic education, career and technical training, or for lifelong learning.
Middletown Adult Education
The Middletown Adult Education school offers a variety of academic programs, job and workplace training, personal enrichment classes and counseling services. Classes are offered at various locations. Several learning opportunities are also available online.
Adult High School Completion Programs
There are three options offered to students looking to complete their high school education. All are offered free of charge to residents in surrounding towns. The adult high school credit diploma program allows student to complete a number of credits and earn a Middletown Board of Education Adult High School Diploma. The external diploma program is designed for older adults who have already gained some professional experience. Students may also complete a series of national standardized tests and earn a State of Connecticut High School Diploma.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) and Citizenship Program
Non-English speaking residents can take ESL classes to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Citizenship classes prepare students to fulfill Immigration and Naturalization Services' requirements for citizenship.
Safe-Serve Food Handler's Certificate Program
Students who complete this program are eligible for the Certified Food Handler designation awarded by the National Restaurant Association. The course consists of three sessions. Students must pass an exam to receive certification.
Adults can choose from courses in photography, animation, watercolors and crayon paintings. Courses are designed for students who wish to explore new artistic techniques. Most courses are offered during the evening.
Home and Garden Classes
Classes in upholstery, interior design, kitchen and bath design, orchid growing, butterfly gardens and flower arranging are among the topics that can be explored. Courses are offered during the evening and are designed for those wishing to explore a new area for personal growth.

Stamford Adult Learning Center
The Stamford Adult Learning Center is run by the local public school district's Office of Adult and Continuing Education. The school provides students with adult basic education and English as a Second Language (ELS) programs. A number of personal enrichment courses are also available.
Adult High School Completion Programs
Adult students lacking a high school diploma can complete their secondary education through the high school credit diploma program, the external diploma program or by taking the General Educational Development (GED) exam. Programs and GED test opportunities are provided at various times and locations.
English as a Second Language Classes
Classes offered at basic, beginning, intermediate and advanced levels provide non-English speakers the opportunity to improve reading, writing and comprehension skills. A family literacy program is offered to parents of young children with a focus on parental involvement in education.
Adult students can explore new styles of dance while keeping active and fit. Classes are offered in ballroom dancing, belly dancing, line dancing, modern dance, Latin dancing, swing and tap dancing. Most classes are held in the evenings.
Topics range from home purchasing to retirement planning. Most classes are one session and are held in the evenings. Additional topics include annuities, working with a financial planner and social security.
Foreign Language Classes
These courses explore cultures and languages, including French, Spanish, Italian and German. Basic classes cover vocabulary, pronunciation and functional grammar. Continuation classes emphasize grammar, advanced pronunciation and dialogue.
