Several community colleges in Maryland offer education programs designed specifically for the adult student. Schools and Programs

Adult learners seeking to enhance their professional skills or further develop a special interest can consider programs offered at many Maryland community colleges. Two of these colleges, located in the central and northern parts of the state, are profiled below. Both schools offer personal enrichment courses as well as programs for English language learners and adults seeking to complete a general education diploma. Other courses are offered in areas of:

Montgomery College's Adult Education Programs

Montgomery College, centrally located in Rockville, Maryland, offers courses for older adult students in computers, finance, art, language and gardening through its Lifelong Learning Institute. General education diploma (GED) and English for students of other languages (ESOL) programs are offered by the Workforce Development and Continuing Education Department.

General Education Diploma Programs

The GED program at Montgomery College prepares students to take the high school diploma equivalency test. Programs are available at two levels for those who require additional education or those who are ready for the GED test.

English for Students of Other Languages Programs

The ESOL programs are offered at various levels to fit the needs of the students. Courses are offered to help English language learners prepare for careers in areas of healthcare, the building trade or customers service, along with a citizen preparation class.

Art Courses

Lifelong Learning Institute offers several art courses. Course topics include drawing, watercolors and self-portraits.

Computer Courses

Computer courses are designed for beginner users. Courses cover computer basics and using the Internet.

Photography Courses

The hobbyist photographer may choose from several photography courses. Students learn landscape and nature photography and the basics of digital photography.

Carroll Community College's Adult Education Programs

Carroll Community College is located in the north central region of the state in Westminster. The college offers personal enrichment courses for adult students through its Continuing Education Department. Courses are offered in the arts, writing, literature and health and wellness in addition to ESOL and GED programs.

General Education Diploma Programs

Carroll Community College's GED program prepares students for the GED exam. Students may enroll in a practice test course before taking the actual exam.

English for Students of Other Languages Programs

ESOL programs at Carroll, available at several locations, are free. Also on the curriculum are advanced classes and online ESOL courses.

Arts Courses

Courses in the arts comprise drawing, painting, watercolors, sculpture and photography. Students interested in crafting may take stained glass and knitting courses, among others.

Writing and Literature Courses

Adult students can choose from courses in poetry or writing for children. A writer's workshop helps new or experienced writers develop their own works.

Health and Wellness Courses

Adult students can participate in fitness classes, including Zumba, aerobics and aquatic exercise. They can learn about preventative and alternative health trends through integrative health lectures or learn the art of yoga and tai chi.
