Adult Education in Pennsylvania with School Information

Throughout Pennsylvania, adult students can find learning opportunities through community colleges and specialized schools. However, several of the state's universities also offer programs catering to adult education. These programs are generally geared towards those who wish to pursue higher education or enhance professional job skills. University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown's Adult Education Programs

The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is a 4-year public school offering certificate, associate's and bachelor's degree programs. The Office of Advanced and Continuing Education provides programming aimed at adult students. These programs can be completed on a part- or full-time basis and are designed to meet the needs of the non-traditional student.

Mechanical Engineering Technology Program

This program provides the foundation necessary to take the Pennsylvania Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination to qualify as Engineers-in-Training. Students study engineering topics such as mechanics, kinematics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and materials science.

Journalism Program

Aspects of the print media--including reporting, editing, writing and design--are covered in this journalism program. Students are required to complete an internship and may also have the opportunity to work on the student-run newspaper.

Computer Science Program

Students in this program are prepared for a variety of careers in the computer science industry, including system analyst and database administrator. The curriculum combines theory and application with topics such as programming languages, systems programming and software design.

Registered Nursing Program

Registered nurses (RNs) seeking higher formal education can pursue a bachelor's or master's degree. A refresher course is also available for licensed RNs who have been out of the workforce and desire up-to-date training in order to return to work.

Business Programs

Adult students can pursue an accounting, finance, management or marketing major. Accounting majors may further specialize in either the financial (CPA) track or the managerial track. The management major offers a general track or an information systems track.

Pennsylvania State University's Adult Education Programs

Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) is a 4-year public school with a main campus located in University Park. Penn State Continuing Education offers programs designed for adult learners in need of a career change, further professional development or degree completion. Certificate and degree programs are offered in business, education, healthcare, human resources and technology.

Business Programs

Penn State offers several certificate and specialized programs in real estate and management. Adult students may also pursue an associate's degree in information sciences or business administration. Those who already hold and associate's degree can pursue a bachelor's degree in business through a degree completion program.

Education Programs

Current teachers can enhance their skills with programs such as the Professional Development in Counseling Series. Graduate certificates are available in technology integration or principalship. Teachers may also wish to pursue a master's degree in one of several specialties offered by Penn State.

Healthcare Programs

A bachelor's degree program is available for registered nurses (RNs). In addition, several certificate programs are offered to healthcare professionals who are interested in administrative or management careers.

Human Resources Programs

A certificate program is ideal for those interested in entering the human resources (HR) field or supplementing a related degree program, such as business administration. A master's degree in human resources and employment relations is designed for current HR managers.

Technology Programs

Adult students can choose from an associate's degree in information science technology or a number of certificate programs. A basic information science technology certificate program is available for those new to the field. Programs in Web programming, computer-aided design and geographic information systems (GIS) are more suitable to those already working in the industry.
