List of Aeronautics Universities and Schools in the U.S.
A bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering is the minimum educational requirement to enter this technical field. Bachelor degree holders who wish to advance into managerial positions can also choose to complete a master's degree. Both degree types are offered by 4-year universities and aeronautical institutes.
How to Choose an Aeronautics University or School
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) defines the field of aeronautics as the science needed to produce flight. Aeronautics encompasses stability and control, aerodynamics, materials and structures and propulsion. Students enrolled in one of the two degree options for aerospace engineering are required to complete foundation courses in each of these fundamental areas of aeronautics.
While a prospective student can enroll in each program separately, some schools do offer combined bachelor's and master's degree programs in the field. These combined degree programs typically take an extra year beyond the bachelor's degree to complete and confer a master's degree in aerospace engineering. Some core courses common to both degree programs include aerodynamics, space mechanics, thermodynamics, aerospace structures and experimental aerodynamics. A combined degree program commonly appeals to prospective students who would prefer to compete for managerial positions after graduation.
Success in these core courses is predicated on a student's knowledge and mastery of basic science and advanced mathematics subjects such as chemistry, physics, differential and integral calculus and matrix algebra. Some undergraduate programs in aerospace engineering may offer students the opportunity to complete an internship. This is strongly encouraged for those students who want to enter the job market rather than pursue an advanced degree.
Prospective aeronautics students should also consider schools and universities that offer engineering camps or programs that supplement their program of study. These camps offer students the opportunity to collaboratively work with other students to design and solve basic and advanced aeronautics issues. These camps are commonly offered in the summer between school years so that they do not interfere with a student's aeronautics curriculum.
