List of Aerospace Universities and Colleges in the U.S.
The aerospace industry is responsible for the design and development of aircraft, spacecraft, rockets, missiles and other flying mechanisms. Students looking to earn a degree in aerospace engineering must consider a few things when choosing a school, such as aerospace programs available, research and work-study opportunities and a university's accreditation status.
How to Select an Aerospace School
Students looking at aerospace science colleges need to consider many different factors, including what branch of aerospace to study. Aeronautics is the area of aerospace that deals with the design and manufacturing of aircraft, rockets and their systems for flight within the Earth's atmosphere. Astronautics deals with the design and manufacturing of spacecraft, rockets and their systems for flight outside of the Earth's atmosphere. While some schools combine both of these concentrations, others offer them as separate concentrations.
Students also must decide whether or not they are going into the military or want military training. Many universities offer aerospace programs and scholarships through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC). These programs prepare students for military aviation and train them as Air Force officers without having to make a service commitment for the first two years of the ROTC program. Students with ROTC scholarships are required to make service commitments.
Additional concerns when selecting an aerospace university include available research programs, work-study opportunities and internships. Research studies allow students to assist aerospace engineers with projects. Work-study programs give students the opportunity to work in their field of study while earning a wage. Internships provide hands on experience, usually through summer programs, working at various corporations.
Prospective students also need to ensure that an aerospace university is accredited. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, (www.abet.org), is responsible for accrediting schools around the country.
