Essential Information

Various 2- and 4-year public colleges and universities in Alabama offer real estate training. Some schools offer undergraduate certificate programs or degree programs with a specialization in real estate. Courses designed specifically to prepare students for the Alabama real estate licensing exam are also available. Other programs are designed for aspiring brokers or real estate training instructors. In addition, some schools offer continuing education courses to existing industry professionals. Depending on the school, courses could be available online.

Career Requirements

A real estate salesperson license is required to sell real estate in Alabama. In order to obtain this license, the candidate must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident at least 19 years of age with a high school diploma or GED. The person must complete a 60-hour pre-license course and pass the licensing exam within 12 months after taking the course to receive a temporary license. To obtain the permanent license, a 30-hour course must be completed within 12 months after receiving the temporary salesperson license. A person who has committed a felony or had a real estate license rejected or revoked within the past 2 years is ineligible for licensure. Auburn University

Auburn University in Auburn offers a variety of online courses for students who plan to become real estate professionals. These offerings include a pre-license and a post-license real estate course, a pre-license real estate broker course and continuing education real estate courses that cover various topics, such as federal law and commercial real estate, ethics in real estate, pricing property to sell and green home construction. This school offers real estate appraisal and inspection courses as well. Auburn University also provides 12 hours of training for instructors who will be teaching risk management to licensed realtors. This training is conducted onsite at the Hyundai Training Center in Montgomery.

Jacksonville State University

The Office of Continuing Education at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville offers online real estate courses. Students who want to obtain a real estate sales license can complete the Alabama sales pre-license course that qualifies them to take the state licensing exam. They can also take an exam preparation course that covers topics that may appear on that licensing exam. A sales post-license course and a broker pre-license course are also available online.

James H Faulkner State Community College

James H Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette offers a 24 credit-hour real estate certificate program that can be completed in 2 semesters. Lawson State Community College - Birmingham Campus

Birmingham's Lawson State Community College offers a 28-credit real estate certificate program that requires general studies in addition to real estate courses. Students complete 12 credits in communication, math, accounting and basic computer coursework. The real estate core consists of courses on real estate principles and law in addition to an independent study course. This program prepares students to take the Alabama Real Estate Commission Examination.

The University of Alabama

Students enrolled at The University of Alabama's Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration in Tuscaloosa have the option to choose a real estate specialization. The real estate courses cover topics like real and personal property law, real estate appraisal and finance, real estate property management and income property valuation. This specialization requires students to complete 4 courses, and students are qualified to take the Alabama Real Estate Salesperson License Exam after completing 2 of these courses.

Troy University - Dothan Campus

Troy University provides a course at its Dothan campus that prepares students to take the license examination to sell real estate. This is a continuing education program, and students receive 6 continuing education units when they complete the course. Classes meet 2 evenings a week for approximately 2 months.

University of Alabama at Birmingham

The Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has a bachelor's program in finance that offers a real estate concentration. The curriculum includes courses on real estate investment analysis and valuation, equity portfolio management, real estate principles and management of financial intermediaries. Students must receive a minimum grade of C in all major courses, and an overall grade point average of C is required to graduate.
