Albany Adult School Overviews with Program Information

The state capital, Albany, is near the cities of Schenectady and Troy in an area called the Capital District in upstate New York. Albany's Adult Learning Center and the Albany Extension of Hudson Valley Community College (main campus in Troy) provide adults with diverse academic and training options. Programs focus on English language acquisition, achievement of a high school equivalency diploma and workforce preparation.

Adult Learning Center's Programs

The City School District of Albany makes its Adult Learning Center available to residents who need to close gaps in their education to achieve their academic and vocational goals. The center addresses the needs of diverse adult residents to learn English, improve their literacy skills or train for the workforce. The Adult Learning Center classes run from September through June.

GED Preparation

General Educational Development (GED) exam preparation classes are available for returning students who want to earn high school equivalency diplomas. Instruction focuses on the major areas covered in the exam: reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Albany area adults who need to learn English or improve their English communication skills may enroll in the Adult Learning Center's ESL courses. Instructors assist adult students with skill development in reading comprehension, writing, listening and conversation.

Office Occupations

Basic courses in computers and computer applications are available for returning students. The office occupation courses emphasize preparing adults for entry-level clerical jobs.

Health Services

The health services courses meet New York state certification requirements for home health aide or certified nurse assistant (CNA) positions. Graduates who pass the state certification CNA exam tend to have a high success rate in finding employment.

Hudson Valley Community College's Programs

Hudson Valley Community College provides tuition-free job preparation and academic development classes to adults through the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center. The Center has facilities in Troy and Albany that provide academic, business, job skills, service and technical programs. The following are examples of some of the Center's Albany adult school options.

GED Preparation

Day and evening courses are available for adults who want to earn General Educational Development (GED) diplomas. Instruction covers essay writing, grammar, reading comprehension, math and concepts in science and social studies.

Job Readiness Training

This program supports adult students in developing the skill sets necessary for getting and maintaining employment. Instruction covers resume writing, interview skills, interpersonal communication, employment retention strategies and money management.

Internet and Computing Core Certification

This comprehensive training program provides adult students with an understanding of the evolution of computing and hardware functioning, as well as essentials skills in document, spreadsheet, presentation and database creation. In addition, the program familiarizes students with digital culture through use of the Internet and digital camera and video technologies.

Building Trades

This training program is designed to prepare adults for entry-level construction and maintenance employment. Through hands-on projects and individualized instruction, adult students acquire skills in plumbing, electrical wiring and technical math, among others.

Dental Assisting Preparation Program

Training provides adult students with the prerequisite skills for entering the online dental assisting program offered by Hudson Valley Community College. Topics covered include CPR and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) certifications, digital literacy and online learning.
