Ancient History Courses and Classes
A bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in ancient history provides students with a thorough understanding of the ancient worlds, particularly Rome and Greece. While the Far East and Egypt accompany these studies at some colleges, a degree in ancient history primarily focuses on Rome and Greece and how their literature, society, culture, religion and politics led the way to the development of today's civilizations.
The Roman Empire Course
This course is often broken up into parts or by topic. Students look at economic, social, cultural, religious, and political themes. Students study the justifications and consequences of imperialism under the Roman Empire. Social topics look into Roman slavery and the varying degrees of freedom as well as social mobility. Finally students analyze the fall of the Roman Empire and how it may have been avoided. This course is usually taken this near the beginning of an ancient history degree program.
The Greek Society Course
This course provides students with an overview of Athens and other Greek city-states, and like the Roman Empire courses, Greek society courses may divide in two or three parts by era or topic. Students learn about the economic and social aspects of Greek city-states between the ninth and fourth centuries B.C.E. Students also look at the Greek gods, myths and culture until the death of Alexander the Great.
Researching Ancient History Course
Researching ancient history courses give students tools to analyze languages, handle evidence and distinguish between civilizations. Archeology, epigraphy, textual criticism and databases are covered. Advanced research techniques for ancient history programs includes numismatics, the history of coinage. This course lays a foundation for research used in later courses, so it is often taken early in a degree program.
War in the Ancient World Course
From Imperial Rome to Alexander the Great, there were many instances of warfare, rebellion and military usage in the ancient worlds. Students study these as well as ancient weapons, warriors, and warfare in archaic and classical Greece and Rome. Students look at the cost and consequences of war, as well as how Greek and Roman war strategies differed from other parts of the world.
Ancient Literature Course
Students study literature written by Greek and Roman authors and philosophers, with close attention to the works of Homer and Plato. Students gain a deeper understanding of Greek mythology and oral tradition. Readings of law, philosophy and mythology accompany Latin and Greek prose.
Ancient Medicine Course
This course is an elective taken near the end of the program once students have a better understanding of the civilizations. Students research and study ancient medicine, including herbs and temple-based medicines. While studying physicians from Egypt to Greece, students take a close look at Hippocrates, considered the father of modern medicine.
Religions of the Ancient World Course
This elective gives ancient history students a perspective on the way ancient people incorporated religious practice in their lives. Students research Egyptian, Greek and Roman gods and goddesses, paying close attention to the purposes of each deity. Students also look at how deities crossed ancient cultures, such as Isis going from Egypt to the Greco-Roman Empire, and the similarities between gods and goddesses, such as Isis, Venus and Aphrodite.
