Architecture Degrees in Utah
Although there are more than 20 schools in Utah, there are only 4 not-for-profit schools that offer programs with architecture training. Aspiring architects in Utah are required to complete a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-accredited program before they can become licensed to work in the state. In addition, candidates have to complete a licensing examination, submit the necessary documentation and pay the required fees. Architects are also required to renew their license every two years.
Students interested in landscape architecture also need to obtain a license, but the requirements are quite different. Landscape architects need to possess a bachelor's or master's degree from an approved landscape architecture program or have at least 8 years of practical experience. This license also expires on a set date every two years, and architects who wish to keep their license must complete continuing education courses.
Salt Lake Community College
This community college, which is based in Salt Lake City, offers an Associate of Science in Architectural Technology. While this program doesn't prepare students to become licensed architects, it can prepare them to transfer to the bachelor's degree program in architecture at the University of Utah. Some of the architecture courses that may be available to students include residential construction, architectural graphics, AutoCAD and architectural drawing.
Snow College
Snow College, located in Ephraim, offers an architecture transfer program. The program can result in an Associate of Science or an Associate of Arts, and students typically complete this program and then move onto a 4-year university to finish the rest of their architectural studies. The school noted that most 4-year schools require students pursuing architecture degrees to have completed courses in physics, calculus, drawing and 2-D design. Students planning on transferring should be aware that Snow College does not offer the 2 architecture courses required for admission to the 4-year program at the University of Utah. However, those 2 courses can be taken at the University of Utah or Salt Lake Community College.
University of Utah
Located in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah offers a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies that can prepare students for a graduate program in architecture. This pre-professional program requires coursework in architectural structures, human dimensions in design, urban design and site planning, environmental controls and materials construction.
The Master of Architecture degree program is approved by NAAB and is the only accredited architecture program in the state. Depending on a student's undergraduate background, some additional prerequisite coursework may be required before he or she can begin working on the professional program requirements. This program is designed so students can pick architectural courses and topics that suit their interests. Students who already hold a professional architecture degree can pursue the Master of Science in Architectural Studies.
Utah State University
Found in the city of Logan, Utah State University offers architectural programs in landscaping that require portfolio submissions as part of the application process. Each student in the bachelor's degree program is paired with a landscape architect mentor who provides one-on-one interaction. The architectural studios at the school also have individual work stations for student use.
Graduates from the bachelor's program can move onto the advanced professional option for the Master of Landscape Architecture degree program. Students who hold a bachelor's degree in another field can enter into the Master of Landscape Architecture first professional degree program, which is accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board. The first professional degree program takes 3 years to complete, and the advanced professional program takes 2 years to finish. Students have the option of completing a master's thesis or a creative project.
