Architecture Schools in Michigan

There are a limited number of architecture schools in Michigan. Four of the five schools on this list offer professional degree programs that formally train students to enter careers as architects and are recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Students who want to become licensed architects in Michigan need to have a degree from a program that's recognized by NAAB or has passed NAAB evaluation. They also must complete three years of work experience as part of an internship and pass an examination.

Andrews University

Located in Berrien Springs, this university offers Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture programs. The school also has a pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies program. The master's program is approved by NAAB.

In general, students take a number of studio courses, where they learn about composition, building principles and the building design process. The programs cover history of architecture, architecture theory and urban studies. Students are likely to take part in internships, and there may be an option to take part in independent research. Outside of class, the school offers summer programs that allow students to study abroad and learn about architecture in foreign countries.

Cranbrook Academy of Art

This school in Bloomfield Hills only offers graduate programs, including a Master of Architecture. This full-time program is not approved by NAAB and is intended for those who already have a professional degree in the field and are seeking additional training. This program does not feature required courses; instead, students create a plan that suits their particular interests. However, all students must complete a thesis and an exhibition of their projects in order to graduate. Work is critiqued by other students, visiting scholars and faculty members.

Lawrence Technological University

This Southfield school has a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture, which allow students to develop portfolios and building design styles. The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies program is not approved by NAAB and is intended for students who want to build an understanding of global architecture. The Bachelor of Science in Architecture is geared toward students who want to become professional architects. The program includes many studio and lecture courses that teach architecture theory and the history of the field. Graduate students can enroll in the Master of Architecture program, which prepares students for leadership careers in architecture. This NAAB-accredited program allows students to focus on ecology, management, technology, health, urbanism or culture. Students can complete the majority of the Master of Architecture program over the Internet, and they only have to come to campus to complete the practice studio.

University of Detroit Mercy

Students who enroll at this Detroit school can earn a Bachelor of Science in Architecture or a Master of Architecture. The undergraduate program is not accredited by NAAB and is meant for students who want to gain a basic understanding of architecture. The NAAB-approved master's degree program is designed for students who want to become licensed architects. This program can be completed in five years and includes the same undergraduate coursework as the standalone bachelor's program. Both programs focus on providing hands-on experience for students through projects, studio coursework and professional internships. Throughout the programs, students learn about theory and its application to the architecture field. Students also have the opportunity to showcase their work online and at campus events.

University of Michigan

Located in Ann Arbor, this university offers professional and pre-professional degree programs that include a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Master of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture and Ph.D. in Architecture. Students learn about the history of architecture, architecture theory and case studies, in addition to developing a portfolio. They can access the latest computer technology in the field at the campus' digital labs, and they can pursue study-abroad opportunities throughout their studies.

The Master of Architecture program is endorsed by NAAB and can be completed in two years by students who already have a pre-professional undergraduate degree in the field. Those who have a degree from a different field can finish the M.Arch. program in three years. The Master of Science is intended for students who already hold a professional degree in architecture and wish to expand their knowledge in the field, while the Ph.D. can be pursued by students who have a degree outside of architecture.
