Comparison of Salt Lake City Art Schools
There are three schools with art classes and programs located right in Salt Lake City. Salt Lake Community College is the least expensive of these options. It's a fairly diverse school with a large visual art and design department. The University of Utah offers a wide variety of specializations within its studio art programs and is home to many art resources and facilities. Westminster College provides studio arts programs. Those who interested in studying or majoring in other fields can still pursue a liberal arts degree or a minor in art.

Programs at Salt Lake Community College
Salt Lake Community College provides a wide variety of artistic programs ranging from certificates to associate's degrees. Most programs mentioned are designed to prepare students for entry-level work and are not suited for transfer to 4-year degree programs.
Certificate of Proficiency in Motion Graphics and Visual Effects
This 28-credit hour certificate program can prepare students for entry-level jobs as 2-D or 3-D technical artists. Required coursework includes drawing, design, animation and storyboarding. Students can specialize in either motion graphics or visual effects, allowing them to select from electives like 3-D modeling, 3-D animation, InDesign software or visual effects and composition.
Associate of Applied Science in Animation
Students who intend to find jobs in 2-D/3-D animation or multimedia development in the film or video game industries might be interested in this 64-69-credit hour program. In addition to general education courses, students can take classes in digital media, figure drawing and digital video production. Some of the specialization courses available include storyboarding, 3-D modeling, animation, VFX/compositing and digital painting.
Associate of Applied Science in Design
Aspiring graphic designers may prefer this 69-credit hour program, which provides coursework in Photoshop, website design, multimedia authoring, InDesign and Illustrator. Before graduating, students also develop a portfolio.
Associate of Applied Science in Illustration
This 68-credit hour degree program is intended for students who seek to work in either traditional or computer art. Some of the emphasis area coursework includes design, Photoshop, photography, illustration, advanced figure drawing and digital painting. By the time they graduate, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in drawing, digital illustration and illustrative photography through a portfolio of their works.
Associate of Applied Science in Multimedia
In this 68-credit hour degree program, multimedia students can prepare for work in a variety of fields like animation, website design or product development. Some of the required core classes include Illustrator software, 3-D modeling, digital painting, figure drawing and digital media essentials. The curriculum is computer intensive, and students should be familiar with computers, Photoshop and drawing techniques prior to enrolling.
Associate of Applied Science in Photography
Before enrolling in this 63-64 credit hour program, students should have digital SLR camera equipment and relevant photographic supplies. Courses in photo vision, drawing, photography light, Photoshop and photography business practices can help prepare students to work as professional photographers. Students also have the opportunity to develop portfolios, take an advanced independent study course and participate in photo fieldtrips.
Programs at the University of Utah
This university provides a vast number of degree programs and specializations for artistically minded students. Undergraduate students must declare art on their admissions application, and graphic design emphasis students are required to submit a portfolio review.
Minor in Ceramics
Students who don't wish to major in art may be interested in this minor. It requires 24 credit hours of basic courses on the construction of ceramics. To enroll these courses, students must obtain permission from the department.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art
This BFA program allows students to select a concentration from ceramics, cross 3-D focus, sculpture/intermedia, painting/drawing, photography/digital imaging, printmaking, ceramics, art teaching or graphic design. First-year students take basic courses on 2-D art, color theory, 3-D art and visual language. Depending on their specializations, students can advance to take courses like advanced life drawing, new media painting, intermediate ceramics, pottery, color photography and much more.
Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art
Those who already hold a BFA can take their educations to the next level by completing this 2-year graduate program. Students select a studio art specialization area based on their artistic interests. Graduate students have the opportunity to utilize their own individual workspaces for the duration of the program. To graduate, students are required to take at least 60 credit hours of coursework, including studio art courses, graduate seminars, allied field courses and art history classes. Students also must complete a final oral exam, project paper, exhibition and exhibition documentation.
Programs at Westminster College
This college provides a couple of programs for those interested in art. The minor and BA program are designed for students who wish to focus on the liberal arts or to select a different major. The BFA program has a variety of specialization options for those who wish to pursue a career in the arts.
Minor in Art
To minor in art, students have to take at least 23 credit hours of art courses like drawing, pottery, photography and art history. They also select elective courses in an artistic area of their choosing.
Bachelor of Arts in Art
This program has a broad, liberal arts focus, but students also take 59 credit hours of arts coursework. Some of the required classes include drawing, photography, pottery and art history. Students are also required to take at least eight credit hours of a single foreign language.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
To be accepted into this program, students are required to complete a portfolio at the beginning of their sophomore years. Selected students can select from concentrations such as painting/drawing, pottery, photography or the studio arts. All students complete drawing, painting, photography, pottery and art survey courses. Some of the many specialization courses offered include intermediate drawing, printmaking, color photography, ceramic sculpture and figure drawing.
Other School Options
Students willing to travel outside the immediate Salt Lake City area can find three schools offering art programs. Weber State University is around 30.4 miles away from the downtown and offers a bachelor's degree in the visual arts . Students interested in pursuing a certificate, associate's degree or bachelor's degree program in art and visual communication can consider Utah Valley University, which is located about 34.1 miles away from the city. Another option for aspiring artists is Brigham Young University - Provost, which is around 38.7 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. The school offers a wide selection of programs in the traditional, performing and media arts.
