Top Information Technology Schools in the Nation

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA

MIT is a private research university that was established in 1861. This institute houses five separate schools and one college on its vast campus. MIT places a heavy emphasis on scientific and technological research for its student body.

MIT's Sloan School of Management is the business school that contains major's pertaining to information technology and related topics. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well certificate programs are available in systems design and management, executive leadership in innovation, management and technology. MIT's Sloan School of Management ranked first for information systems programs in 2011 by U.S. News and World Report.

2. Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA

Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1900. Its first incarnation was known as the Carnegie Technical Schools until 1967 when Carnegie Mellon University gained its current name.

The School of Information Systems and Management at Carnegie Mellon University offers graduate degree programs in information security policy and management, information systems management and information technology. The programs combine coursework with hands-on experience and are available in flexible formats. The Carnegie Mellon University was ranked first in computer science by U.S. News and World Report in 2011.

3. University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin (UT) was founded in 1833 and has one of the largest student enrollments of all colleges in Texas. The university features over 17 colleges and schools and enrolls about 51,000 students per year.

UT's Department of Computer Science offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in computer science and technology. The business school at UT also offers a doctorate degree program with a concentration on information systems. This degree program emphasizes technology through coursework in IT infrastructures, mobile computing and systems development methods. Students here will become familiar with the ways information systems and technology can be applied to today's business dealings and usage in today's society.
