1. Vanderbilt University (Peabody) in Nashville, TN
Vanderbilt University, founded in 1833, is a private institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The university's name is derived from Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt; the man who first endorsed the university with a million dollar grant that he hoped would heal the educational wounds brought on by the Civil War. In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked Vanderbilt University (Peabody) first in the best education school and forth for elementary teacher education categories.
Vanderbilt University houses the Peabody College of Education and Human Development on its large campus. This is where students can enroll into bachelor's and master's degree programs in education and teaching including musical arts and teacher education, international education policy and English education. Several other specializations in this field are also offered to undergraduate and graduate students, such as child development and child studies.
2. Harvard University in Cambridge, MA
Harvard University is the second ranked school for best education schools by the U.S. News and World Report in 2011. This Ivy League university is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States, established in 1636. The college is named after clergyman, John Harvard and its prestigious legacy is well-known around the world.
The Harvard Graduate School of Education, founded in 1920, educates its students in the many topic areas surrounding teaching and education. The university offers master's and doctoral degree programs in education and special studies, teacher education and technological innovation. The curriculum includes coursework in development and leadership, educational policy and strategy.
3. Stanford University in Stanford, CA
Founded in 1891, Stanford University is a private, research university named in honor of Leland Stanford Jr., the son of railroad tycoon Leland Stanford. The university houses several colleges and professional schools in the areas of law, medicine and earth sciences. Stanford University was ranked fourth in the nation for top education schools, as well as second for the best schools offering secondary teacher education degree programs by U.S. News and World Report in 2011.
Stanford University's School of Education contains graduate degree programs for teaching and education. With a little over 400 students enrolled full-time in its education program, this university provides more attention and hands-on teaching to students. Master's and doctoral degree programs are offered in curriculum and teacher education, as well as learning sciences and technology design.
