Addison, Illinois is located in DuPage County, about 23 miles from Chicago. In 2000, the city's population was about 37,800. The median age is 34, and the annual per capita income is $21,615. The unemployment rate is 7.9 percent. Of those 25 and over, 73.5 percent have high school level or higher education, 19.5 percent have a bachelor's degree or higher and 5.2 percent have graduate or professional degrees.
Winter temperatures range from lows of around 17 degrees to highs of about 33 degrees Fahrenheit, while average summer temperatures range from 60 degrees to around 82 degrees. The area is often subject to extreme weather, though, and temperatures can sometimes rise to 100 degrees or fall to below 0 degrees. The city averages 31 inches rain and 29 inches of snow annually.
Addison has a thriving local park system with 24 parks and recreation facilities and social programs for all ages. The village's proximity to Chicago also gives residents access to world-class museums, shopping, theater and professional sports venues.

The manufacturing industry provides nearly a quarter of the jobs in Addison. Educational, health and social services, retail trade and professional, scientific, management, administrative and waste management services provide most of the remaining employment opportunities. United Parcel Service (UPS) is the town's largest employer, with 2,280 workers. Gingiss Formal Wear and The Pampered Chef have their headquarters in Addison, and Nabisco also has a major facility there. Despite the presence of large companies, two-thirds of all employment opportunities in Addison are provided by businesses with 20 or fewer employees.
Educational Opportunities in Addison
A campus of the DeVry Institute of Technology and a branch of the College of DuPage are both located in Addison. Many more educational institutions are found in the nearby city of Chicago, however, which is home to the University of Chicago, a world-class research university. DePaul University and Loyola University are also both found in Chicago, while the University of Illinois at Chicago, the city's biggest university, features the largest medical school in the U.S. The suburb of Evanston, about a half-hour's drive from Addison, hosts Northwestern University, also one of the nation's foremost research universities.
