About Adelphi University

Adelphi University is a private, 4-year university, and its main campus is located in Garden City, NY. There are also centers located in Manhattan, the Hudson Valley and Hauppauge, NY. The university's 75-acre campus is lined with over 60 types of trees, shrubs and flowers, and the school is a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. The university is close to Long Island's beaches and parks, and it's about 45 minutes from New York City. In 2010, Adelphi University was selected as the Best College in the Northeastern Region by Princeton Review.

Academics

Approximately 5,000 undergraduates and 2,900 graduate students attend Adelphi, and its eight schools, colleges and institutes offer over 50 programs of study. The College of Arts and Sciences houses about 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students, and it offers degrees in 37 disciplines. The average undergraduate class size is about 21 students. Among the most popular bachelor's degree programs are health professions, social sciences and psychology, as well as business, management and marketing. Online courses are available. Some courses are completely online, while others are 30%-79% online with required campus meetings.

At Adelphi, students can pursue degrees in a wide variety of majors, including political science, theater, music and environmental studies. Undergraduate programs are offered at all of the schools, institutes and colleges, including the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work and the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. Adelphi's College University offers a flexible education schedule for working adults. The Honors College allows top students to take part in research in laboratories and hospitals, and there are also opportunities to participate in special study abroad programs.

One of the programs that makes Adelphi stand out is the Levermore Global Scholars Program, which was created in 2006 and encourages an international outlook among students. The university's Learning Disabilities Program, developed over 25 years ago, was one of the first programs in the nation for students with learning disabilities. The university also offers joint degree programs, allowing undergraduate students to earn a degree from Adelphi while also participating in a professional program from another university. Participating partner universities include Columbia University, New York University College of Dentistry and the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry.

Admissions

For Fall 2011, 69% of the 8,278 undergraduate applicants were admitted. Of those admitted, 17% enrolled. For undergraduate admission, students can use the Common Application, Adelphi's online application or a paper application. The university has rolling admissions and strives to notify applicants within three weeks of receiving the completed application. The university requires all students to submit an essay or personal statement. For this requirement, students can choose to use an essay they have already written for school or answer a new essay question.

The university requires an official high school transcript, official SAT or ACT scores and at least one letter of recommendation. An interview is highly recommended for all students and is required for students applying to the Honors College, unless there is a special circumstance. The university accepts AP credits and International Baccalaureate (IB) credits.

In the Fall of 2011, Adelphi's student population consisted of 4,473 full-time undergraduates and 1,621 full-time graduate students. Out of all incoming freshmen in Fall 2011, 85% were from New York and 12% were from other states. The undergraduate population was 69% women and 31% men.

Tuition & Financial Aid

For the 2012-2013 school year, a 3% tuition increase has been implemented. For undergraduate students entering in Fall 2011, tuition and fees are $29,320 per year. Tuition for social work, upper division nursing and education is slightly higher than this. For graduate studies, tuition varies by program from approximately $30,150 to $37,420 per year. For 2010-2011, books and supplies were estimated to cost $1,000, and room and board costs were estimated to total $11,000.

Tuition is due at the time of registration. Payment plan options include paying monthly or twice per semester. It's also possible to pre-pay for multiple years upfront. The university has many scholarships available for top students, each with specific criteria to qualify. Scholarships range from $500 to $24,000. Students with financial need can qualify for state and federal grants or apply for student loans or parent loans. Graduate students can also apply for federal student loans, assistantships or a limited number of scholarships offered by the university.
