Essential Information

Several schools offer online courses in civil engineering technology, but lab requirements mean these programs cannot be completed entirely through distance learning. Some programs offer just a few courses online, while others are in a hybrid format that combines online and on-campus requirements. In online courses, students can usually access lessons and course materials as their schedules permit, within established deadlines.

Applicants need a high school education, and courses in mathematics, computer use and science would be useful, but are not required. The civil engineering technology program requires students to study the fundamentals of engineering and construction. Courses may cover topics such as fluid mechanics, hydraulics, highway engineering and the properties of soils.

Graduates can find employment as civil engineering technicians. They may want to seek certification from a professional organization. Many graduates go on to pursue bachelor's degrees in civil engineering.


Online Associate's in Civil Engineering Technology Overview

Fully online associate's degree programs in civil engineering technology are not available since students must gain practical, hands-on experience conducting labs, surveying land, studying maps and drafting buildings. However, some courses are available online or as hybrids, which have in-person and online components. Through an Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology program, pupils master reading maps and land surveys, study the principles of engineering highways and identify materials used in construction. They also learn to work as part of a team and find solutions to technical problems.

Although there are no specific prerequisites for this degree program, enrollees should have a firm grasp of math and science. Programs related to civil engineering include construction technology, construction management and environmental engineering.

Program Information and Requirements

Students can earn their degree in as little as two years. Although few courses are available online, some schools offer introductory courses and courses that don't have hands-on components via distance learning. Typically, to complete the online courses, participants log onto web-based educational servers, such as Blackboard or Angel, where they view assignments, watch lectures and participate in web-based classroom discussions. They can complete the courses on their own schedule, but regular due dates and assignments keep them from falling behind.

In addition to high-speed internet, participants should have a word processor, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Java so they can easily view any videos.

In addition to civil engineering technology courses, students must complete general education courses. These include studies in math, science, English and history.

Engineering Seminar

This online course provides students with the basics skills they should have for a career in engineering and technology. It identifies common problems engineers encounter and methods for solving them.

Construction Methods

In this online course, learners discover types of construction projects they could be involved in, learn about the basic methods of operation and common construction procedures. They also use mapping and land surveying to determine where to build and how new projects can affect a community.

Common Materials in Civil Engineering

This course may be found online. Students learn about the properties of civil engineering materials, such as asphalt and concrete, that are common to construction projects.

Career Information for Graduates

Some sample job options for graduates of an associate's degree program in civil engineering technology include civil engineering technician and surveying technician. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that the employment of civil engineering technicians would increase by 12% between 2010 and 2020 (www.bls.gov). As of May 2011, the median annual wage for civil engineering technicians was $46,900. Surveying technicians had a projected job growth of 16% and a median annual wage of $39,350.

Continuing Education and Certification Information

Bachelor's degree programs are available in civil engineering and related programs, but they're also difficult to find online. Depending on the career they pursue, graduates may wish to obtain certification. For instance, surveying technicians may sit for the Certified Survey Technician credential exam offered by the National Society of Professional Surveyors.
