Associate of General Studies: Degree Overview
Read the details of an associate's degree program in general studies. Discover the coursework that students must complete, and check out careers they might pursue after graduating. Also, research continuing education options.
Associate of General Studies (AGS) programs offered by 2-year institutions do not always have a specific concentration, though this varies by school. These programs are often designed with future transfer students in mind. Prospective transfer students must understand both the requirements of the degree-granting school and the school to which they wish to transfer. Some community colleges don't require a high school diploma or equivalent for entry to an AGS program, but placement testing might be required.
The courses required for an AGS degree do not always prepare students for a specific career, though there are sometimes concentrations as part of the program that do. The skills and attributes that might be developed in an AGS program include written and verbal communication, increased literacy and mathematical ability, critical thinking and broad educational knowledge. Students in an Associate of General Studies program can expect to take courses in subjects such as the following:
- Computer science
- English composition
- Philosophy and critical thinking
- Public speaking
- Society and Gender
Popular Career Options
Associate degree programs in general studies are not typically designed to lead to any particular career, and in most cases are specifically designed for students without particular career goals. Programs may allow students to focus in specific subjects that could be useful in future careers or 4-year educational programs. These topics could include:
- Social sciences
Continuing Education Information
For some students, the Associate of General Studies degree is a springboard to a 4-year institution. Students planning on taking this route should begin their planning early to make certain that specific courses will grant transfer credit at the destination college or university. Graduates of AGS programs could be prepared for a wide variety of bachelor's degree options, including studies in graphic design, criminal justice or education.
