Bachelor of Science in Web Development
A web development bachelor's degree program can prepare students to design and organize websites for a variety of purposes. Programs may emphasize concepts like marketing, e-commerce or telecommunications. Web developers typically must learn programming languages, such as HTML, Java or XML. Additionally, students at this level may choose to minor in an information technology subject like cyber security or networking.
Graduates may find career opportunities in areas such as web design and development, advertising, web applications design and multimedia design. These programs are computer oriented and require students to have at least a high school diploma before enrolling.
Course Topics
Typically, web development programs include multiple courses in computer programming in addition to creative subjects like video or audio production. Students can learn about concepts that apply to internet marketing, advertising and web applications. Coursework may vary if a concentration option is available. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) categorizes web developers within a broader group that also includes computer network architects and information security analysts. From 2010-2020, the BLS predicted that this group of professionals would see a 22% increase in employment, which is faster than the average for all occupations. This was attributed to a number of factors, including the growth of online purchasing and the contribution that web developers make to the use of websites for sales and marketing.
In May 2011, the BLS stated that this group earned a median annual salary of about $78,000. Web developers in particular were reported to have earned between $61,000 and $99,000 in 2012, according to Robert Half Technology.
Continuing Education Information
According to the BLS, web developers may be qualified for work with a high school diploma, an associate degree or a bachelor's degree. However, web development options at the master's degree level may be available. Some universities offer master's degrees solely in web development, while other universities may offer web development as a specialization option within a broader field, such as mass communication. Specific fields of web development, like the development of web applications, may be studied through graduate certificate programs.
