Civil structural engineering prepare students to design towers, bridges and buildings. Programs provide students with an understanding of a structure's response to gravity, wind, seismic activity and other types of loads.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Structural Engineering

Civil structural engineers design structures to hold up against all types of natural forces, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and winds. Universities and colleges generally offer a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering. Students gain a through background in civil engineering and the skills needed to identify and solve civil engineering issues. They acquire the abilities to implement engineering tools and techniques. In addition, they learn about project management and the relationships between construction, design and development. Applicants to a bachelor's in civil engineering degree need to have a high school diploma or GED and a background in math and the sciences.

Program Coursework

A program in civil and structural engineering generally offers classes in social sciences, humanities, physics, chemistry and math along with introductory engineering courses. Core engineering courses may include construction materials, construction management, fluid mechanics, soil mechanics and transportation engineering. Continuing Education and Licensure

Civil structural engineers who deal with the public need to obtain licensure by passing two state exams to become PEs (professional engineers). Requirements vary depending on the state; therefore, students should check with their state licensing board. Graduates wanting to further their skills can move on to a Master of Science in Engineering program and from there to a doctorate program if they so desire.
