Bakery Department Manager: Duties, Outlook and Salary
Bakery department managers oversee a supermarket's bakery section and help staff the store's team of professional bakers. The manager is responsible for directing the entire department, from managing all staff members, to coordinating the preparation of food items for sale.
Bakery Department Manager Job Duties
Bakery department managers are generally in charge of all components of the bakery department. The often must hire, train and evaluate staff, as well as develop new bakery items and assist with food production.
Staff Management
The bakery department manager must determine the staffing needs of the bakery area and hire qualified individuals to work in the department. In addition, the manager provides necessary employee training on store policies and procedures, develops weekly work schedules and supervises employee work output. Bakery managers also work to create team environments by handling employee issues and modeling appropriate behavior and performance.
Product Management
Bakery department managers supervise the production of bakery items, generally using the recipes and procedures established at the corporate level. In some cases, bakery managers work to develop new product offerings based on customer demands. The manager oversees the purchasing of food supplies and might design product displays for the bakery department. Depending on the job, managers might also handle department marketing and organize specials, sample tastings and other events.
Other Management Roles
In most grocery stores, the bakery department manager works with store management to develop and maintain a department budget. The bakery department manager is further responsible for ensuring that employees follow all food safety and employee safety protocols. He or she may also work with other department managers to ensure that the overall store appearance and operations are up to standards.
Bakery Department Manager Job Outlook
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated that the demand for skilled bakers would not significantly grow between 2008 and 2018 (www.bls.gov). Food service management positions were predicted to grow by five percent during the same time. Turnover in food service and grocery management positions tends to be high, so positions open regularly. Those with a few years of professional food service experience should have the best job opportunities.
Bakery Department Manager Salary
According to the BLS, the mean wage for food service managers as of May 2010 was $52,220 per year, or $25.11 per hour. Food service managers in Nevada, Delaware, Washington, New Jersey and Massachusetts had the highest wages in the country, with mean salaries of $63,000 and higher. PayScale.com reported that most bakery managers took in between $21,427 and $54,876 annually as of January 2012.
