Degree programs in biostatistics are found primarily at the graduate level and can lead to a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Once enrolled, aspiring biostatisticians study statistical theory and analyze epidemiological data while preparing for careers in academia, government health agencies or other related areas. Three of the top schools with graduate programs in this specialized field of study include Harvard University, an Ivy League institution, as well as Duke University and Johns Hopkins University.

Top U.S. School with Biostatistics Programs

1. Harvard University in Cambridge, MA

Harvard University is an Ivy League school that ranked second among national universities in 2014. Additionally, the university also placed sixth on the Forbes.com list of 'America's Top Colleges' in 2011. The Department of Biostatistics in the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) offers a Master of Science in Biostatistics. Biostatistics researchers at HSPH have access to the Bioinformatics Core, a collaborative research center for bioinformatics, biostatics, epidemiology and environmental health science.

2. Duke University in Durham, NC

Duke University is a private institution that placed seventh on U.S. News & World Report's survey of national universities for 2014. As of 2011, Forbes.com also ranked Duke 22nd on its list of America's Top Colleges. The Duke University School of Medicine offers a Master of Biostatistics through the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. Program emphasis is on analysis, communication and biology. Students take courses in statistical theory and applied biostatistics methods.

3. Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD

Johns Hopkins University is a private research school that U.S. News & World Report ranked 12th among national universities in 2014. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health offers a Master of Health Sciences (MHS), Master of Science and Ph.D. in Biostatistics. The 1-year MHS program in biostatistical theory and methods has been especially designed for professionals. The purpose of the Ph.D. program is to prepare students for careers as researchers or biostatisticians.
