Becoming a forensic pathologist requires completion of a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program. Upon earning a medical degree, graduates continue in a residency and fellowship program to gain training in the forensic pathology specialization. 1. Ohio State University in Columbus
Ohio State University was originally established as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1870, but it changed its name in 1878. The university offers over 175 undergraduate degrees and majors, 115 master's programs and more than 90 doctoral programs. In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked the College of Medicine 27th among accredited medical schools in the country. Graduates of the M.D. program can pursue a pathology residency or fellowship.
The Division of Autopsy Pathology within the Pathology Department works with both the Ohio State University Medical Center and the Franklin County Coroner's Office. It conducts research and provides clinical care as well as educational opportunities.

2. University of Minnesota in Minneapolis
University of Minnesota is a large research institution founded in 1851. It comprises19 colleges and schools, including the Medical School. The University of Minnesota Medical School received high rankings in 2011 from U.S. News and World Report, achieving 11th place for its primary care program and 38th for research. Additionally, the Medical School is in a research partnership with the Mayo Clinic.
The M.D. program takes four years to complete. Following graduation, students have the opportunity to enroll in residency and fellowship programs in forensic pathology with affiliated hospitals and institutions, including rotations within the county medical examiner's office.
