1. University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia

The University of Pennsylvania was ranked number five in the 2011 U.S. News & World Report list of the best national universities. The School of Engineering and Applied Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the computer sciences. The Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Science is a liberal arts degree that teaches the foundations of computer science, software, and information systems. Coursework includes math, statistics, programming languages, information systems design, and database development.

A Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) in Computer and Information Science offers concentrations in such areas as telecommunications, computational linguistics, and biomedical systems. Classes include network architectures, distributed computing, and systems security. Since the MSE program requires strong math and computer skills, an undergraduate degree in a computer science is recommended, though non-technical applicants could pursue a Master of Computer and Information Technology (MCIT).

A Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science is available for students who plan to teach at the college level or pursue academic research. 2. Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky

Named in 2011 as the 12th best school in the South by U.S. News & World Report, Bellarmine University is a small, Catholic university near downtown Louisville.

At the undergraduate level, the school offers two bachelor's degree programs in the computer sciences. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Information Systems emphasizes the use of computer information systems design and development in business solutions. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Computer Science is a liberal arts program that teaches a broad spectrum of topics on computer science and includes some coursework in computer information systems.
