Marine engineering is the support, operation, creation and planning of equipment or systems that are used by marine vehicles like ships and submarines. Currently, there are a limited number of schools that offer marine engineering programs, and most of those schools are located on the East Coast. Top Marine Engineering Schools and Colleges

United States Coast Guard Academy

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) was listed as the top school for regional colleges in the northern part of the United States in the U.S. News and World Report 2011 rankings. Additionally, The Princeton Review noted that the school is one of the best northeastern colleges in terms of financial aid on its 2010 rankings of best value colleges in the nation. Graduates must serve five years on active duty with the Coast Guard, most often beginning as an ensign.

USCGA offers undergraduate majors in naval architecture and marine engineering, and marine and environmental sciences. The marine and environmental sciences program offers fieldwork on a coast guard research vessel, while the naval architecture and marine engineering programs provides internship, directed studies research and capstone design projects opportunities.

United States Naval Academy

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is ranked by The Princeton Review as one of 2010's best schools in the northeast. In the same year, U.S. News and World Report' ranked USNA as the 16th best liberal arts school in the country. Similar to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy must enlist for at least five years in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps.

The naval architecture and ocean engineering program at USNA is accredited by ABET, Inc., (formerly Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). The program, which awards a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), also offers a service academy exchange program, as well as leadership positions among the student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen.
