Top Marine Engineering Schools and Colleges
United States Coast Guard Academy
The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) was listed as the #2 schools among regional colleges in the northern part of the United States in the U.S. News and World Report 2014 rankings. Graduates must serve five years on active duty with the Coast Guard, most often beginning as an ensign.
USCGA offers undergraduate majors in naval architecture and marine engineering, and marine and environmental sciences. The marine and environmental sciences program offers fieldwork on a coast guard research vessel, while the naval architecture and marine engineering programs provides internship, directed studies research and capstone design projects opportunities.
United States Naval Academy
The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is ranked by The Princeton Review as one of 2010's best schools in the northeast. In 2014, U.S. News and World Report ranked USNA #12 among the best liberal arts school in the country. Similar to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy must enlist for at least five years in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps.
The naval architecture and ocean engineering program at USNA is accredited by ABET, Inc., (formerly Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). The program, which awards a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), also offers a service academy exchange program, as well as leadership positions among the student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen.
