Best Medical Residency Programs: List of Top Schools and Hospitals

A university's medical school may offer residencies in pediatrics, family medicine, oncology or urology, among other specializations. Top programs can be found at the University of Washington, University of North Carolina and Johns Hopkins University, all of which are nationally ranked. Individual residencies take approximately three years to complete.
Top U.S. Schools and Hospitals with Medical Residency Programs
1. The University of Washington in Seattle
The University of Washington (UW) is a public institution with a School of Medicine that ranked eighth on the U.S. News & World Report list of top pediatric medical schools in 2011. UW offers 92 accredited clinical fellowship and residency programs in anesthesiology, psychiatry and pediatrics, among other specializations. In the 3-year pediatric residency, based at Seattle Children's Hospital, students work in the neonatal ICU (intensive care unit) and the normal newborn nursery, among other areas. In the final year, students may hold positions as associate chief residents for a 2-month period.
2. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC)
U.S. News & World Report ranked the School of Medicine at UNC second on its list of top institutions for training in family medicine for 2011. The university's medical school offers 54 graduate medical education programs, including a 3-year residency at the Department of Family Medicine. Students provide inpatient care at UNC's Family Medical Center and outpatient care at the William B. Aycock Family Medicine Building. They also perform 1-month rotations in emergency medicine, pediatrics and urology, among other areas. During the final year of the program, residents work in rural practice at the Chatham County Emergency Department.
3. Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD
Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is a research institution that made The Princeton Review's list of 'The Best 376 Colleges' in the nation for 2012. JHU's School of Medicine offers an internal medicine residency training program through the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The program has two study options: a traditional track and a general internal medicine track. Students in both programs provide care in areas such as cardiology, rheumatology and endocrinology.
