Plastic surgery is surgical procedure that corrects or restores an area of the body. Plastic surgeons complete a 4-year graduate medical school Doctor of Medicine program, and then participate in a hospital residency program with a focus on plastic or reconstructive surgery. Concentrations are available in adult or pediatric plastic surgery specialties for residents, such as cosmetic surgery, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, post-bariatric surgery, burn treatment and various reconstructive surgeries.

Top Medical Schools with Plastic Surgery Residencies

1. University of Washington in Seattle

The University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine encourages its students to focus on serving underserved populations, such as rural towns, inner cities and developing countries. Residents in the plastic surgery program are trained in surgical and medical care, patient care, research and administration during a 6-year residency. The first three years are spent learning general surgery and the final three are spent in a plastic surgery residency. Fellowships are also available in pediatric craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, hand and microsurgery and burn reconstruction for those who have completed a plastic surgery residency.

Residents may practice at UW Medical Center, ranked 12th among best hospitals in 2010-2011 by U.S. News & World Report, where the focus is on cosmetic surgery, breast reconstruction, trunk surgeries and microsurgery. The UW plastic surgery program is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

2. University of California in San Francisco

The University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, which was founded in 1864, was the fifth best medical school as ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2010. Founded in 1951, the plastic surgery program is one of the oldest in the country, accredited by the ACGME.

The 6-year clinical training program highlights extremity reconstruction, complex wounds, burn care and reconstruction, facial fractures, breast reconstruction, abdominal wall reconstruction and hand surgeries. Residents of the plastic surgery program may practice at the UCSF Medical Center, which was ranked seventh among all hospitals in 2010 by U.S. News & World Report.
