One of the four concentrations available at the doctorate level is ancient history. Students enrolled in this program study the history of the Mediterranean, specifically 18th century Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures, through a curriculum consisting of seminars, classical literature and inscriptions, skills classes and narrative history.

2. Yale University in New Haven, CT
The overall goal of Yale's Department of Classics is to conduct original research of the life and times of ancient Greeks and Romans. Graduate students enrolled in the ancient history degree program have access to the Classics Library, Yale's coin and papyri collections and electronic databases for research purposes. Yale's Department of Classics, ranked at the top, with three other history graduate programs, by U.S. News & World Report for 2009, does award graduate students with a Master of Arts after the completion of seven classes within the department; further, all Ph.D. students receive a Master of Philosophy before the completion of their dissertation. Students applying to the classics graduate program, however, are expected to carry on to the doctorate level.
