The top schools in this field, the University of Wisconsin - Madison and University of Washington - Seattle, offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field. The University of Wisconsin edges out the University of Washington because it has a slightly higher program ranking.

1. University of Wisconsin - Madison

In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Wisconsin - Madison (UW - Madison) #4 in the nation for speech pathology graduate programs, and in 2012 it rose to #2. UW - Madison's Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology is a clinical degree that prepares students for speech pathology practice or doctoral study. Students in this master's program learn how to diagnose and treat communication abnormalities, including traumatic, cognitive and swallowing disorders. The school also offers two bachelor's degrees in communicative disorders through its College of Letters & Science and College of Education.

2. University of Washington - Seattle

U.S. News & World Report ranked graduate speech pathology programs at the University of Washington - Seattle #5 in 2008, and #3 in 2012. This school offers a Bachelor of Science and two Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology degree programs. The two master's programs include one that focuses on preparing students for clinical practice in schools, community clinics and private practice, and one that trains those who plan to work in medical settings, like hospitals and rehab centers. Master's students can choose from eight specialties in speech-language acquisition, identification, prevention and remediation of communication disorders, speech production, speech perception, hearing sciences, psychoacoustics, computer recognition and human communication disorders.
