How to Select a Program for Biomedical Repair Training
Associate and bachelor's degree programs are available in biomedical technology or biomedical engineering to future biomedical equipment technicians. Both programs train prospective biomedical equipment technicians (BMET) to install, troubleshoot, test and repair defibrillators, radiology equipment and life support machines.
Because they typically work on site, technicians must be able to communicate effectively and work quickly. When selecting a program, students may consider schools that train students to work in teams and develop communicative skills. Technicians often work with technology that is used to save lives and must run effectively; therefore, students may also want to consider programs that teach aspiring technicians to perform preventative maintenance.
Programs with hands-on training allow students to gain practical experience while in the classroom. Some schools may have laboratories with modern medical equipment available exposing students to a wide variety of equipment, including computerized and network technology, as well as allowing students to work with up-to-date technology in the field. Additionally, prospective biomedical equipment technicians may want to consider programs that provide them with the educational foundations needed to sit for the Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician exam.
Associate of Applied Science in Biomedical Technology
Associate degree programs introduce students to circuit analysis, network security and hospital ethics. Students may consider programs with instructors who have an in-depth knowledge of the biomedical technology field. Programs may also offer certificates for specialized training.
Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Technology
Bachelor's degree programs provide students with a foundation in engineering principles and mathematics. In some programs, students may study biology along with engineering. The curriculum explores theories and principles in medical equipment design, biomechanics and product liability. While some programs may offer flexibility with online course options, prospective students should not expect to complete an entire degree program online.
