Top School in Phoenix for CAD Drafting Courses
Mesa Community College has two campuses in Mesa, AZ, approximately 18 miles from Phoenix. It features career and technical training, in addition to college-transfer programs. Students interested in CAD drafting and design engineering will find a number of associate's degree and certificate options at Mesa Community College.
Mesa Community College
Originally opened in 1960 as one of three extensions of Phoenix Junior College, Mesa became a community college in 1966. It is now the largest of Maricopa County's ten community colleges, serving approximately 27,000 students a year. Mesa Community College (MCC) has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1967.
MCC's Applied Sciences and Technology Department is home to an array of drafting and design programs in architecture, construction, manufacturing technology and microcircuit mask design. The department also offers a number of other programs, including dental hygiene, agribusiness, welding and veterinary technology. Both certificates and Associate of Applied Science degrees are available.
CAD Drafting and Design Engineering Programs
Certificate in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting, CAD Drafting Level 1
Students in this program learn the computer-aided design (CAD) skills for entry-level drafting jobs in the fields of architecture and construction. Required courses include advanced and 3-dimensional computer-aided design and drafting and foundations of construction drawing. A total of nine credits of coursework must be completed, and students must earn a grade of C or better in each required course.
Certificate in Survey and Civil Drafting, CAD Drafting Level 2
This program requires 27 credits of coursework to complete, and it prepares participants for careers as drafting technicians in the construction, civil engineering and surveying fields. Required courses include 3-dimensional and advanced computer-aided design and drafting, surveying, foundations of construction drawing and civil drafting. Students learn to prepare documentation and working drawings for construction projects. Students can choose to complete volunteer work, an internship, cooperative education or a special project.
Certificate in Architectural Detailing, CAD Drafting Level 3
This 33-credit certificate program prepares students for jobs as residential and commercial architectural detailers. Students take courses in commercial and residential architectural drafting, 3-dimensional and advanced computer-aided design and drafting, architectural detailing and construction methods. The program also includes a hands-on component that can be completed by participating in a cooperative education experience, pursuing an internship opportunity or engaging in volunteer service.
Associate in Applied Science in Architecture
With three tracks to choose from, participants are prepared for careers in architectural drafting, architectural design or urban development. Intermediate algebra is a prerequisite for all tracks. The core curriculum introduces students to computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), architectural design and site planning, as well as construction basics like cost estimation and materials selection.
In the architectural drafting track, students learn architectural drafting for both residential and commercial projects, architectural detailing and advanced CADD. Hand-drawing techniques are also developed. Elective courses for the architectural design track are similar to those of the drafting track, except that architectural design students have the option of taking landscape and environmental design courses.
Associate of Applied Science in Electro/Mechanical Drafting
Students train to work as drafting technicians in the manufacturing and electronics engineering industries. Participants choose one of two tracks: microcircuit mask design or computer numerical control (CNC) programming; technical math is a prerequisite for both. Required courses cover topics such as technical drafting, industrial safety and computer-aided drafting using AutoCAD.
