CPI Certification: Information on Crisis Prevention Training
Counselors, educators, healthcare professionals and human resources personnel may benefit from learning how to work with emotionally distraught, violent or disruptive people. This crisis prevention training is offered by professional organizations such as the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). Read this article to learn how human service personnel may become certified to train their co-workers in this discipline.
What Training is Offered?
The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) offers nonviolent crisis intervention training designed to teach best practices for managing difficult situations and disruptive behaviors. Students learn how to identify at-risk individuals and use nonverbal and verbal techniques to defuse hostile or belligerent behavior. They also learn how to control their fear and anxiety in a crisis or avoid injury when a crisis becomes physical. Students are taught to respond to a variety of situations, including natural disasters, terrorist attacks and fires.
CPI also offers a training module called Prepare Training, which focuses on crisis intervention in the workplace. The program was created to address workplace safety and positive communication skills.
The dementia care specialists program offered by CPI is designed for social workers, therapists and other caregivers. Students learn how to recognize the stages of dementia, such as Alzheimer's, and deliver care based on their patients' abilities. This training enables caregivers to spend less time on behavioral issues and more time on patient care.
What Certification is Available?
Students who complete a 3- or 4-day seminar and pass a program assessment can become CPI Certified Instructors. These Instructor Certification Programs train participants not only to respond to crisis situations but also to teach their peers. Instructor certification is available in the areas of nonviolent crisis intervention and Prepare Training. Students who complete these programs may be able to receive continuing education credits from their state nursing, education or counseling boards.
Certified instructors must attend a renewal course every four years to maintain their credentials. These courses are available in the areas of crisis intervention for individuals with autism or violent behavioral disorders.
What is the CPI?
The CPI is an international organization that delivers training and certification programs in this field. Designed for educators and human service providers, specializations are available in nonviolent crisis intervention, dementia care and workplace violence prevention.
