Degree Options for Industrial Engineering

Bachelor's degree programs tend to focus on engineering and offer a concentration in industrial management engineering. These programs cover engineering, business and management principles in their curriculum. This is the minimum level of education necessary for most engineering positions, some of which are discussed below.

Graduate programs may result in a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), a Master of Science (M.S.) in Industrial and Management Engineering or a Master of Industrial Engineering (MIE). M.S. programs require a thesis, while M.Eng. and MIE programs normally do not. Featured common topics are linear programming and optimization, computer-aided manufacturing, technology management and work system design. Those working in research positions may need to have a graduate degree, while it might otherwise promote job advancement opportunities for all professionals in this field.

Industrial Engineer

Industrial engineers conceptualize, design and test systems that manage industrial productions. They are concerned with streamlining all aspects of business operations, including labor, machinery, energy and materials. They may also be involved in quality and inventory control, logistics and cost analysis. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that, in 2010, there were 202,990 industrial engineers in the nation and that these engineers earned a mean annual salary of $78,450 (www.bls.gov).

Industrial Production Manager

An industrial production manager coordinates the production processes included in manufacturing a product. They ensure that output amounts correspond with output plans and that the product manufacturing cost remains within the originally planned budget. Many of these managers have degrees in industrial production or industrial engineering.

Management Consultant

Management analysts evaluate a company or business' procedures and operations to identify places needing improvement. They may also suggest methods to make the business operate more efficiently. Sometimes, these consultants analyze and make suggestions for a business' financial management. The BLS estimated that job opportunities in this field would increase 24% during the 2008-2018 decade. These professionals perform similar job tasks to those performed by business operations specialists, as stated by the BLS. According to a 2010 BLS report, there were 993,980 business operations specialists in the nation at that time that earned a mean annual salary of $67,710.
