Certified Corporate Trainer Education Requirements

A corporate trainer specializes in developing skills, such as communication, of the employees of a corporation or non-profit organization. Corporate trainers may consider a broad liberal arts background and can seek certification after three years of employment.

Educational Requirements

A certified corporate trainer is a human resources specialist and college graduates with a degree in human resources, such as the Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Management or Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Development, can gain the edge in the employment market. Liberal arts degree programs with majors in human resources are rare and it is advisable to take courses related to the field, including business administration, behavioral sciences, principles of management, organizational structure and industrial psychology.

As corporate trainers often teach new software, computer courses and information systems courses are also highly recommended. Certified corporate trainers can also take English courses to improve their writing skills or a foreign language course to enable conversation with the diverse workplace population. Aspiring corporate trainers with a broad liberal arts background can learn how to develop curriculum, teach skills to individuals and groups and evaluate the training results.

Certification Information

The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) provides certification to corporate trainers who wish to be certified (www.astd.org). This certification is an industry standard for proving proficiency and ability in the field and requires three years of work experience in order to qualify for the exam; however, five years of experience is preferred by the organization. According to ASTD, preparation for this certification exam typically takes between 8-12 weeks of study in areas that include managing learning functions, improving human performance and learning designs.

Through the certification process, the candidate can be recognized in the field and can continue to advance in the field as a professional through re-certification. The knowledge exam covers nine areas and consists of 150 multiple choice questions. The work product assessment part requires submission of a recent work sample and essay question portion. Upon successful passing of the certification exam, individuals will receive the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) credential.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of employed human resources, training and labor specialists was expected to increase by 21% from 2010-2020. The BLS reports that training and development specialists earned a median of $55,930.
