Colleges That Have Architecture As a Major: List of Schools
Architecture is the study of how to design and create buildings and other structures. Undergraduate architectural courses are available at various colleges throughout the U.S.
How to Select an Architecture School
Accreditation is an important factor in the world of architecture. To sit for most state registration board exams and become a certified architect, a person must hold a degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The NAAB is the only accrediting agent in the U.S. that is qualified to accredit architectural education programs. The NAAB only recognizes three program types, which are a Bachelor of Architecture, a Master of Architecture and a Ph.D. in Architecture. All other programs, such as a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, are not recognized by the NAAB and will not qualify students to sit for most state registration board exams.
Many schools that offer bachelor's degree programs in architecture do not offer NAAB-certified courses. Bachelor's degrees from these schools will qualify graduates to work as architectural interns or enroll in NAAB-certified master's degree programs. Some schools offer two programs, one that is NAAB-certified and one that is not, so it is important for students to pay close attention to the program they choose. Students with NAAB-certified bachelor's degrees are qualified to take most state exams and will be ready to enter the workforce as professional architects.
Different schools offer various approaches to architecture and concentration areas. While some schools offer a broad overview of the field, focusing on a well-rounded education rather than specialization, others focus on specific information, such as sustainability, urban planning, landscaping and environmental design. Schools offering Bachelor of Art programs may include more classes that focus on the art, history and culture of architecture, while schools offering a Bachelor of Science will remain more technically practical. Bachelor of Architecture programs are typically more intensive and concentrated because they require students to have no further schooling before entering the market.
