Essential Information

Colon therapy, or colon hydrotherapy, is a method of cleansing the large intestine with treatments of water and herbal solutions. The practice is considered a form of alternative or complementary medicine, and training programs are generally not accredited or regulated. The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT) does provide a list of approved schools offering certificate programs that can prepare students to earn I-ACT certification.

Students who are interested in earning certification from I-ACT are required to complete at least 100 hours of training in a colon hydrotherapy certificate program. Students enrolled in a colon hydrotherapy certificate program learn how to communicate with patients, evaluate patient intake forms, screen patients for any potential complications, sanitize equipment and perform a colonic.

Education Prerequisites

Most organizations offering colon hydrotherapy certificate programs do require incoming students to hold at least a high school diploma and be at least 18 years of age. Those schools that do not offer human anatomy and physiology as part of their curriculum typically require incoming students to prove sufficient knowledge of those subjects before they can begin core coursework.

Program Coursework

Colon therapy certificate programs are typically comprised of classroom lectures, individual research and study hours, video instruction, hands-on table work and colon hydrotherapy sessions. Some topics covered in courses include:

  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Reflexology
  • Body work skills
  • Lymphatic work
  • Colon hydrotherapy
  • Breathing and diet
  • Patient communication
  • Sanitation procedures

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Colon therapists who are certified by I-ACT can gain positions within several healthcare and alternative healthcare institutions. These include:

  • Wellness facilities
  • Hospitals and healthcare centers
  • Colonic institute
  • Colon therapy training center

As of 2012, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the median salary among all healthcare practitioners and related technicians was $60,200. Healthcare professionals in the lowest 10% made $30,870 or less per year, while those in the top 10% earned $128,000 or more. Employment of health diagnosing and treating practitioners was expected to rise 26% from 2010-2020, according to the BLS, which was a faster-than-average rate.

Certification and Continuing Education

The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy is the most recognized certifying body in the field of colon therapy. The I-ACT offer four levels of certification for professionals in the field: the Foundation Level, the Intermediate Level, the Advanced Level and the Instructor Level. Students can also access a list of I-ACT approved schools where they can gain the education necessary to be eligible for certification.
