Colon Therapy Certification and Certificate Program Info
Colon therapy, or colon hydrotherapy, is a method of cleansing the large intestine with treatments of water and herbal solutions. The practice is considered a form of alternative or complementary medicine and its training programs are not accredited or regulated. The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT) does provide a list of approved schools offering certificate programs that can prepare students to earn I-ACT certification.
Colon Hydrotherapy Certificate
Students who are interested in earning certification from the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy are required to complete at least 100 hours of training in a colon hydrotherapy certificate program. Curriculum in the program should meet the standards set forth by I-ACT.
Students enrolled in a colon hydrotherapy certificate program learn how to communicate with patients, evaluate patient intake forms, screen patients for any potential complications, sanitize equipment and perform a colonic. They must also gain a background in human anatomy and physiology, and should learn how to explain colon therapy techniques to patients.
Most organizations offering colon hydrotherapy certificate programs do require incoming students to hold at least a high school diploma and be at least 18 years of age. Those schools that do not offer human anatomy and physiology as part of their curriculum typically require incoming students to prove sufficient knowledge of those subjects before they can begin core coursework.
Colon therapy certificate programs are typically comprised of classroom lectures, individual research and study hours, video instruction, hands-on table work and colon hydrotherapy sessions. Some topics covered in courses include:
- Human anatomy and physiology
- Body work skills
- Lymphatic work
- Colon hydrotherapy
- Breathing and diet
- Patient communication
- Sanitation procedures
