CompTIA Linux+ Certificate Program
CompTIA Linux+ certificate programs prepare individuals to install, maintain, secure and troubleshoot systems running the Linux operating system. Students learn to use command lines, configure hardware, manage files and encrypt Linux systems. By the end of the program, students are familiar with the Linux kernel and may be prepared to sit for the CompTIA Linux+ certification exams. Programs are often found at community colleges or in a university's continuing education department; some programs are offered online.
Education Prerequisites
Admission requirements vary for each program, and some schools allow anyone to enroll in the program. However, other programs may require applicants to have experience working with computer networks and operating systems.
Course Topics
Individuals in these certificate programs learn about system architecture to gain a basic background in using Linux. Next, they learn about user management, network and Internet connectivity, disk management, maintenance tasks and customization. Some topics learned include:
- Linux installation
- Shell-scripting
- Troubleshooting techniques
- Linux network management
- Linux security
- Linux system administration
Popular Career Options
Certified individuals may work in entry-level positions as technicians and programmers or in advanced roles as system or network administrators. Advanced roles may require additional education, such as a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field. Some possible positions include:
- Software application specialist
- Help desk technician
- Web administrator
- Database administrator
- Junior Linux administrator
Certification and Continuing Education Information
Before sitting for the Linux+ certification exams, CompTIA recommended that individuals have one year of experience administrating Linux and certifications in CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+. These additional certifications verify that the individual is competent in basic information technology skills and networking. CompTIA Linux+ certification requires applicants to take two exams: one covering the system architecture, commands, filesystems, devices, installation and package management, and the other covering security, networking, data management, scripting, user interface and administrative tasks.
After earning the CompTIA Linux+ certification, individuals can receive the accompanying LPIC-1 certification from the Linux Professional Institute (LPI). Those wanting to gain additional Linux administration skills can pursue the LPI's LPIC-2 certification for advanced users and the LPIC-3 certification for expert users. Individuals can also pursue computer-related associate degrees that offer courses in Linux. A few programs may offer a Linux concentration. Bachelor's programs in information systems and related fields may also offer Linux-focused classes.
