The University of South Florida

The University of South Florida first accepted students for enrollment in 1960. In 2010, it enrolled approximately 47,000 students and offered about 230 programs of study. It operates four campuses in the Tampa, St. Petersburg area. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits it. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked it no. 16 of up-and-coming schools as well as one of the best national universities. Additionally, in that same year, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named it a top public research university.

The College of Engineering consists of six departments, including the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. In 2010, the department celebrated its 30th anniversary. In that same year, the National Research Council ranked it as having one of the top 50 research-doctoral programs in the nation. Also in 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked the college as one of the best engineering schools and the department as having one of the best computer science degree programs.

Computer Engineering Programs

Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering

This 128-credit hour program incorporates basic engineering techniques into designing and developing computer software and hardware. Students complete a core engineering curriculum covering topics such as statistics, electrical systems and engineering materials. Other courses include calculus, programming, linear systems, algorithms, computer architecture and operating systems. Students also complete a senior project. Due to overlapping curriculum, students may complete a 5-year joint bachelor's and master's computer engineering degree program.

Master of Science in Computer Engineering

This 30-credit hour program can be completed as a thesis or non-thesis option. The non-thesis option requires additional coursework. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of computer science and engineering, operating systems and algorithm analysis. Required courses include algorithms, computer architecture and operating systems. Elective coursework is based on the student's interests.

Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering

Students in this program must complete a total of 90 credit hours of study. Program requirements include coursework based on the student's field of study, qualifying exams, one semester of teaching, the completion of a math minor and writing a dissertation. Applicants need only have a bachelor's degree, but a master's degree in a relevant field such as computer science or engineering is preferred. Courses in the curriculum are determined by the student's chosen field.
