Concrete engineers are concerned with the safety of structures and must make informed decisions regarding the reliability and risks of certain types of concrete. They may also be responsible for determining a project's budget.
Concrete Engineer Requirements
Becoming a concrete engineer generally entails completion of bachelor's degree program in civil engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). These 4-year degree programs familiarize students with the theory and practices involved in design and construction. Courses may include integrated design, fluid mechanics, construction materials and computer-aided design. Some civil engineering programs also offer concentrations that focus on subjects like structural, environmental or construction engineering.
Concrete engineers who intend to offer their services to the public are required to obtain professional engineer (PE) licensure. The licensure process typically includes completion of an ABET-accredited degree program and passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Those who pass the FE exam usually go on to earn at least four years of experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer. Candidates may then sit for the Principles and Practice in Engineering exam, which leads to PE licensure.
