Continuing Education for Cosmetologists: Options and Requirements

Most states require cosmetologists to complete a certain number of continuing education hours to renew their licenses. Completion of these courses not only keeps cosmetologists in compliance with their state laws, but it ensures that their skills and job knowledge are current.

List of Common Cosmetology Courses

Hair Coloring Course

Coloring techniques and the chemical composition of coloring agents are covered in this course. Students learn about the proper color combination and measurements. They are taught highlight and lowlight application, with an emphasis on foil placement and hair color customization. Instruction is given in tinting blonde hair to brunette. Also, students are taught how to remove ashy, dark or brassy tones from hair.

Hair Cutting Course

This course reviews various hair-cutting techniques. Demonstrations are given in how to create angles and precision haircuts in today's popular styles. Razor cuts and slide cutting of hair are discussed. This half-day program helps students to gain confidence and skill in using clippers, shears and razors.

Hairstyling Course

Thermal hair curling and pressing, pin curls and roller placement are important subjects of this class. Instruction is given in finger waving and cutting hair into layered styles. Demonstration of knowledge is required upon completion.

Braiding Course

A hair braiding course teaches the process of braiding and adding extensions to hair. Students learn the art of creating basic braid designs to achieve different looks. This course teaches braiding styles such as Cornrow Weave, Tree Braiding and Freedom Braids. Students also learn how to weave hair extensions into the braid.

Shampoo and Scalp Massage Course

Students learn the techniques and theory needed to perform a shampoo and scalp massage. This course discusses the history of massage and the effect it has on the human body. Therapeutic massage techniques are taught for the neck and shoulder, scalp and face.

Requirements

Licensed cosmetologists must take continuing education programs to renew their licenses. These state-approved programs may be found online or through a local cosmetology school. Along with cosmetology refresher courses, they must take other courses that address health and safety. For example, they may be required to taken an occupational health and safety so they can identify hazards at work, as well as a HIV prevention and sanitation course to learn how the disease is transmitted and to learn about the techniques needed to disinfect and sterilize equipment.
