Cordova is a community on the outskirts of Memphis. It is part of Shelby County, which encompasses seven cities around Memphis, including Arlington, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington. Shelby County had a population of 939,465 residents, according to 2013 U.S. Census estimates. Most residents, nearly 53%, were African American, 38% were white and about 6% were Hispanic in the 2010 census.
Shelby County is home to numerous attractions, including Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Pink Palace Museum, and the National Civil Rights Museum can all be found here. Downtown Memphis features Beale Street and Mud Island River Park.
Economy and Industry Outlook
The industries providing the largest numbers of jobs in Shelby County, based on 2008 to 2012 census data, are service industries, transportation and retail trade. Education, social services and healthcare services topped the list, with 22.5% of residents employed in this industry. Transportation employed 11.5% of residents and retail trade employed 11%. Waste management, professional, scientific and administrative services employed 10%.
Cordova is home to two proprietary institutions: ITT Technical Institute and L'Ecole Culinaire Memphis. An additional 35 schools are found within 25 miles of this community. About 11 miles from Cordova, in Memphis, is the University of Memphis, which has about 22,000 students.
Rhodes College, a small school of about 2,000 students, is also in nearby Memphis. It was ranked 54th among liberal arts colleges in 2014 by U.S. News & World Report. Mid-South Christian College, Christian Brothers University and Memphis College of Art are just some of the schools located nearby. Students can also find two theological seminaries in the area along with an optometry school and health sciences college.
