Culinary Degrees: Top Rated Culinary School - Arlington, VA
Northern Virginia Community Colleges offers a certificate program and an apprenticeship program to aspiring chefs and experienced culinary professionals. These programs, which are available on the College's Annandale campus, located about seven miles outside of Arlington, VA, teach food preparation and kitchen management techniques.
Northern Virginia Community College
Northern Virginia Community College, commonly referred to as NOVA, offers college credit and non-credit programs on nine campuses throughout northern Virginia and online. In 2010, the public 2-year school enrolled more than 100,000 students. It has guaranteed admissions agreements with 38 of the 4-year colleges and universities in the state. The curriculum for its associate's degree programs is approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Hospitality Management Department offers culinary arts certificate of completion and apprenticeship programs. These programs prepare graduates for entry-level chef positions or assist current culinary professionals in specializing in a field. The apprenticeship program is offered through an agreement with the National Capital Chef's Association and is the only program of its kind in the D.C. area. Both programs teach cooking techniques and management principles. The certificate program consists of a year of classes, while the apprenticeship requires three years of paid work experience and two classes. Several of the Department's faculty members have master's degrees and have worked as executive chefs in hotels and restaurants.
Culinary Arts Programs
Culinary Arts Certificate
Consisting of 31 credit hours, this program teaches food safety and sanitation, cost control, culinary arts principles, nutrition and restaurant organization. Students practice their culinary skills on commercial equipment in the program's state-of-the-art kitchen. Credits earned in this program can be applied towards earning an associate's degree in hospitality management at NOVA.
Culinary Arts Apprenticeship
The program teaches the culinary arts and management skills through hands-on learning. Students in this program must perform 6,000 hours of on-the-job training under a qualified chef in a restaurant, hotel or club, and subsequently complete two classes. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Cook exam offered by the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute.
