About Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College was founded by Reverend Eleazar Wheelock in 1769 and is located in a rural setting in Hanover, NH. It's the 9th oldest college in the U.S and a member of the Ivy League. In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked the college as 11th in the nation. It received an endowment of more than $3.4 billion in 2011, and the Carnegie Foundation designated the college a research institution. The 'Dartmouth College Case' of 1819, which was tried in the Supreme Court, is one of Dartmouth's claims to fame that allowed private institutions to conduct their dealings without state interference.

Academics

Dartmouth University has more than 40 undergraduate departments and programs, and the most popular majors as of 2011 were government, English, history, biology, engineering, economics and psychological and brain sciences. There are also graduate programs in arts and sciences, medicine, engineering and business. Students can choose from more than 46 off-campus, or study abroad, programs throughout their time as undergraduates; these off-campus programs are located in 20 countries around the world. Almost 66% of all undergraduate students participate in at least 1 of these programs before they graduate.

Admissions

Students who wish to apply to Dartmouth College should apply by January 1st for regular decision or by November 1st for early decision. Early decision is a binding contract in which accepted students must withdraw all other college applications. Students can complete a common application online as well as submit Dartmouth's supplement application. For the 2011-2012 academic year, undergraduate tuition and fees for full-time students was about $42,996 per year. Graduate students paid approximately $41,836 per year for tuition and fees in 2011-2012. Dartmouth practices need-blind admissions, which means that a student's inability to pay for tuition and costs doesn't determine whether or not that student is accepted. Financial aid at Dartmouth is awarded on a need basis, which means that any accepted student who demonstrates financial need can qualify for scholarships or loans that are not necessarily based on academic merit.
