Denver Job Outlook & Top Growing Career Opportunities
Does the thought of living in a thriving, contemporary city surrounded by the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, breathtaking views and year round sports make you want to pack your bags and leave? The state of Colorado's Business Retention and Expansion office works hard to remove barriers and attract businesses to the Denver area. This has resulted in a hot job market for several industries in Denver.
Jobs in Nursing and Health Care
The Colorado Nurses Association, www.nurses-co.org, reports that the nursing shortage in Denver is twice the national average and predicts that by 2020, there will be approximately 30% vacancies in nursing positions in Colorado. Other jobs in health related fields that are in high demand include nutritionists, radiologic technologists, physician's assistants, physical therapists, medical assistants, occupational therapists, hospital admissions clerks, medical transcriptionists, case managers, medical office clerks, pharmacists, and medical illustrators.
Jobs in Retail Sales
According to the 2006 Colorado Job Vacancy Survey for the Denver metropolitan area, there are more positions in retail sales than any other category. There were approximately 6,000 openings for retail associates. There have been large expansion projects creating more retail space in the metro Denver area including a 185,00 square foot sporting goods store and a 350,00 square foot urban mall.
Jobs in Commercial Shipping and Trades
Two major railway freight companies and an abundance of air cargo and motor freight carriers make Denver a regional leader in the commercial transportation industries. Large construction projects, including the Denver International Airport, hotels, theaters museums, and retail spaces provide many jobs for construction workers, iron workers, roofers, concrete finishers, and stonemasons.
Jobs in Financial Industries
Denver is the financial capital of the Rocky Mountains and is sometimes called the 'Wall Street of the Rockies.' Opportunities are plentiful for securities brokers, mortgage specialists, mutual fund managers, commodity brokers and real estate managers.
