Spokane Community College

Spokane Community College (SCC) first opened its doors in 1963, with just 12 teachers and about 20 students. It now hosts more than 7,300 students annually, 71.5% of whom are enrolled in technical programs. Many programs are also designed for transfer to a 4-year college. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accredits the school, which is part of the state's community college system.

As part of the technical education division, SCC's Architecture and Engineering Department offers programs in civil and mechanical engineering, architectural technology and computer-aided design (CAD). The latter has become necessary in almost every field of engineering, as well as in electronics, structural design and architecture. Students seeking drafting careers may apply to the certificate or Associate of Applied Science CAD programs.

Computer Design Technology Programs

Certificate in CAD Drafting

In just four quarters, this program prepares students for jobs as CAD drafters in a variety of professions. Lessons emphasize hands-on computer work in a lab setting, while also teaching leadership, collaboration and communications skills via the classroom. Topics include applied math and writing, schematics, solid modeling and tolerancing. CAD drafting practice focuses on precise and accurate computer representations. Other classes cover architectural and mechanical CAD applications, as well as rapid prototyping and fluid power drafting.

Associate of Applied Science in CAD Drafting

This 6-quarter program includes all of the courses in the certificate program, but adds advanced drafting skills and delves into specialized topics. These include CAD applications for civil, mechanical and structural engineering, as well as those for piping and fabrication. Students learn to read blueprints and interpret engineering graphics. Electives provide the opportunity to explore surveying, materials science and residential CAD.

Graduates are able to create computer-aided drawings and plans, work with 2-D renderings and understand the applications of CAD in a variety of industries. They are qualified to seek work as CAD drafters in the engineering, HVAC, electronics and manufacturing industries.
