Essential Information

Several schools offer bachelor's degree programs in humanities that can be completed entirely online. Students don't have to follow a set schedule as they download videos of lectures and work on class assignments, although there are deadlines for completing work.

Online humanities degree programs give graduates exposure to a variety of liberal arts subjects. Some programs focus on general studies, while other programs allow students to pursue a concentration in topics including literature, communication or cultural studies.

These programs require four years of study, but within that timeframe there is a great deal of flexibility regarding the curriculum. All students complete general education requirements, such as English composition, mathematics and social studies. In their humanities studies, a foundation course in humanities is generally required. Students choose other courses that help them meet their career goals. Some schools call for a final research project.

Overview of an Online Bachelor's Degree in Humanities

An online humanities bachelor's degree program provides students with a broad liberal arts education, pulling from a wide array of disciplines. Concentration areas may include anthropology, women's studies, philosophy, history, English and ethnic studies. A humanities program explores the role humanities plays in society, focusing on areas such as past and present culture and cultural sensitivity. Emphasis is also placed on developing research, critical thinking, interpersonal awareness, writing, oral communication and problem solving skills.

Program Information and Requirements

Humanities programs typically do not have a predetermined list of required courses, instead allowing students the opportunity to work with an advisor to select courses tailored to their interests. Many programs are degree completion programs and allow students the opportunity to complete the degree entirely online.

Online humanities programs use online learning platforms such as Blackboard to allow students to view lectures and take part in class discussions via chat rooms or discussion boards. Distance learning students also have access to online library materials such as eBooks and journals, an online writing lab, online tutoring and more. Computer requirements include an updated operating system, DSL or cable Internet connection, a DVD drive, specialty software programs and plug-ins.

Sample Bachelor's-Level Humanities Coursework

Online bachelor's degree programs in humanities generally don't have a stringent set of required coursework, giving students a great deal of freedom in developing a curriculum. In addition to general education requirements, students work with advisors to pick courses from a common set of areas.

Literature Courses

Literature courses allow students the opportunity to explore diverse forms of both American and world literature over the course of history. Courses may focus on multicultural literature, Shakespeare, the American novel and more.

History Courses

History courses offered as part of a humanities degree look at the social, political and cultural context of both American and world history. Topics may include Western European history, immigration, the Vietnam War, U.S. popular culture and the American South.

Women's Studies Courses
