Duties and Requirements for a Certified Nursing Assistant Teacher
Certified nursing assistant (CNA) teachers are practicing nurses who provide students with the nursing theory and clinical instruction required to pass the CNA certification exam. CNA teachers are required to be registered nurses (RN) or licensed practical nurses (LPN) and have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Job Duties of a Certified Nursing Assistant Teacher
CNA teachers are responsible for developing and implementing a curriculum that will prepare their students to pass the CNA certification examination. They are required design informative lectures and evaluate students through assignments, clinical work and exams. Teachers must clearly explain both the theoretical and practical aspects of a CNA's job, so that students will be qualified for employment in a hospital, nursing home or long-term care facility. CNA teachers are required to stay abreast on current developments in the field; therefore, many teachers also continue to work as a nurse in addition to a CNA teacher.
Teachers should have excellent nursing skills, as well as the ability to communicate their knowledge and experience to their students. CNA teachers are most often employed by colleges and universities, but some find work in health care facilities.
Job Requirements for a Certified Nursing Assistant Teacher
In order to become a certified instructor, certified nursing assistant teachers must complete a special training course, sometimes known as a Train-The-Trainer program, which provides them with basic instructional methods and evaluation techniques they will need in the classroom. Applicants for the program are required to be an RN or LPN, have a BSN and have at least two years of prior work experience as a nurse. Additionally, CNA teachers must have a year or more of experience caring for elderly patients or those with chronic diseases. Prior experience in adult education is preferred.
CNA teachers can advance their careers by earning a master's degree in nursing with a nurse educator specialization. These programs explore advanced teaching techniques, the theoretical knowledge and clinical experience necessary to train future nurses. Nurse educators can also prove their competency by completing a voluntary certification. The National League for Nursing, an accredited organization, administers the Certified Nurse Educator Examination to educators holding a nursing license, master's degree and two years of nursing experience.
Salary Information and Career Outlook
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that jobs for nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants, a category which includes CNAs, will grow by 21% between 2012 and 2022. The BLS also reported that the median annual salary for nursing assistants was $24,420 in May 2012.
Employment opportunities for nursing instructors at the college level are expected to increase 35% between 2012 and 2022, which is considerably faster than the average for all career fields. The median salary among these professionals was $64,850, per the BLS.
