Job Duties for E-Business Consultants

E-business consultants look at the operational and technological needs of a business, which can include an improved database system or improved Internet or Intranet use. They might help design a software system to improve inventory control or online customer service needs. Depending on their area of expertise, e-business consultants might advise on marketing, advertising or web optimization solutions. Those with a finance or economic background might provide detailed advice on cost effective approaches to improving a business plan.

Job Requirements for E-Business Consultants

E-business consultants should hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in business administration. Many undergraduate business administration degree programs now include e-commerce or e-business courses within the curriculum. Master of Business Administration and Master of Science programs exist that offer a concentration in e-business or e-commerce.

Aspiring e-business consultants might be able to use internships to gain a level of expertise in consulting services. In general, consultants must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills. They should possess the ability to see the big picture while paying attention to details. Overall project management is another important skill for e-business consultants to have.

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The BLS doesn't provide information specific to e-business consultants. However, it did report that management analysts - also known as management consultants - earned median salaries of $79,870 as of May 2013. The number of employed management analysts was projected to grow 19% between 2012 and 2022, according to the BLS, which is a faster-than-average rate. During this time, an increased push for efficiency and international expansion among businesses should drive employment growth.
